The problem is that there are numerous versions of Unix, each with many different mail programs. Actually, the forwarding of this mail by Berkeley is quite suspect, since most of those "UseNet" users are not Arpa contractors. I am not arguing for stopping information flow, but the problem is that these people communicate with autodialers that call each other up at 2am every morning. Thus by the time the message gets to them, and they give their response, it has often gone through a half dozen phone hops and taken a week. In the meantime we get another dozen responses from other scattered about the country because of the phase problem. If you think this is bad on editor-people, you should see unix-wizards! I think pressure should be brought against Bezerkeley to stop polluting the mail systems with stuff that does not conform to RFC 733. -- Bill -------
