turning ports on
Hacks should be aware that port(1) should be used with discretion:  turning
(say) a zodiac line or the CSRG line on is not only silly (nobody is ever
going to login from the other end of those lines) but makes the port
unusable for its proper purpose AND tends to make the system thrash.  In
retrospect it's obvious that "on" and "off" are a poor choice of words
for port(1), they tend to imply that it's the port itself that is being
affected in some mysterious way, and not the login waiting on the port.
