Backslash w strikes!

In the never-ending set of nroff problems, Joseph S. Ossana has done it
again.  BEWARE of ANY file containing a backslash 'w'.  When one tries
to format a file containing one of these nasties, you get nroff trying
to measure the width of something or other and it produces characters
NEVER before seen in the file (e.g 0.32 >9.8 .nr18--I made that up, but
it serves the purpose.
