This is less obvious than beginning text lines with . or ' , but is even more disastrous since most lower-case letters have special meanings to nroff/troff when preceded by a backslash. Add this to the list of things to look for in the event of inexplicable misbehavior. I don't think it is fair to criticize JFO for this one; if one is going to use a particular character to flag commands, this inevitably implies being careful how you use that character.
