Personally, I'd rather have the specialized groups.  I prefer
knowing the topic of an item before I read it, and the newsgroup
name has been the most reliable.  It would be that much harder for
me to wade through everything in net.sports to find only
those articles on scuba diving -- article titles aren't always that
descriptive.

Perhaps what we need are several levels in newsgroup names, instead
of just two.  For example, net.sports.scuba, net.sports.ski, etc.
