      I agree with warren at ihnss. We here at teklabs have quite a few
users in /etc/passwd(over 300). I don't know how many news articles we
lost due to the locking problem; also, someone subscribed to a list
that had 101 characters(when the limit was 100) and he just happened
to be the first user in the .uindex file, so no one could do anything.
This went on for a couple of weeks until someone said they couldn't
subscribe to news. The idea of having a central file that so many
processes use(without a reasonable locking mechanism) just won't work;
however, I can see the point of disk utilization and so many .*rc files.
They do tend to proliferate.
