Each system can from time to time tell the systems it is connected to which items it has and their checksums. There would then be a protocol by which a system could ask a neighbor to retransmit an item that had somehow been garbled. This mechanism is essentially the same as I have proposed to minimize the time machines spend talking to each other. But the objection usually raised to my proposal (i.e. you have to talk twice to get an item) doesn't apply if it is only used as a backup to the primary transmissions. Jerry Schwarz harpo!jerry
