Every time you read news, the whole goddam .newsrc is initially read in.
During your session, each time a newsgroup is selected the in-core .newsrc
line is expanded to a bit-map.  When another group is selected, the bit-map
is compressed back into the in-core .newsrc line.  In the End, the whole
goddam in-core .newsrc is written back out, no matter what.  Guess what?
If you left readnews in the middle and modified your .newsrc, the changes
go away when the thing is written out again.
