The only real reason I've heard people cite for running VMS is that the
VMS Fortran compiler produces much better code than the UNIX f77 compiler.

If transportability of software across hardware boundaries means nothing
to you, and if you like intricate packets of funny little goobies to
do common ordinary I/O, then go with VMS.
