card reader tests
#1 card reader (the "Unix" card reader) gets read checks on our decks
even when reading in local mode (no connection to the machine).  So it
needs servicing (prophecy:  serviceman comes and says "well, those decks
are offpunched -- you can't expect it to read THAT").  When I tried the
#2 reader (the one that triggered power problems the other day), it ate
the first card.  It is out of action, with a card fragment in its innards.
