If you say "kill 0", this will kill every process you can reach -- EXCEPT YOUR SHELL. So if something is going badly wrong, you can clobber everything without logging yourself off at the same time. "kill -9" lacks a little something of being mnemonic -- suggestions are solicited for some more mnemonic form. Chris has suggested "shellkill" (i.e. "shellkill 123" expands to "kill -9 123").
