whereis 1...
The problem is not so much that whereis expects arguments with a specific
number of digits, as that it expects arguments that match the naming
conventions of the ttys, i.e. tty01 and not tty1.  A quick fix is to change
the grep pattern to accept extra leading zeros;  this is not perfect but
it will help.
