Autzoo.549 hacknews utzoo!henry Wed Apr 29 20:14:20 1981 state of the Unix Now running off our drive (as opposed to the loaner we've been using of late). Also now running a Unix with the card reader driver and the periodic-jobs mechanism in it; the card reader driver now works. As an experiment, we are running with /tmp on the loaner drive, to see if having /tmp on a separate set of heads helps performance any. First impressions are that the select lights sure do blink a lot during an nroff, which is a strong indication. We may try moving the swap area as well, although there is not an awful lot of time to (a) do this, and (b) observe the results, before Ampex takes the loaner drive away (which they currently intend to do Friday). Apologies are extended to everyone inconvenienced by tying up the magtape drive for the last two days and by the lengthy (longer than we expected, even) backup period today. Reading over 100 megabytes of files back off tape is a slow process (it would have been about a factor of 3 faster were it not for write verifies, but them's the breaks).
