disk drive stupidities
Now running a Unix with further mods to the disk driver.  Mods this time
consisted mainly of revising the ioctl calls so ssm(1) can set the driver's
patience level.  (I also took the opportunity to remove the SMIOCLAST call,
which was put in on speculation but has never been used.)  ssm(1) has been
modified to match.

We are now running (silently!) with a patience level of 2 set in /etc/rc.
