In response to wildbill's bug reports...

The failure to update .newsrc when overrunning LINES should be fixed.

To get rid of old news most easily, do
	readnews -p > /dev/null &

There was a bug (in gamma, I think) that made checknews -e fail.
If you remove an "argv++"
from the source to checknews, the bug seems to go away.
