VMS has the facility to pass all characters (I mean ALL!) to the user's program. This feature is available through the /PASSALL option of the SET TERMINAL command interesting enough, and is also available to the user program using a system service. In this mode absolutely every character is transferred and the terminal driver does nothing more than shift bits between the unibus port for the device and its appropriate input stream buffer. VMS *does* do it right, now if UNIX does not have such a user settable feature then that is yet another winnage point for VMS. --Jsol
