old news
Something I just realized I hadn't announced.  The old-news archives now
live in /usr/spool/news/.old .  Subdirectories thereof hold the articles;
the file "allindex" contains filename, date, newsgroups, and title for
each article (it's big...).  The old .canned directory is now just for
things cancelled as junk;  don't cancel stuff just because it's old.  The
.canned directory is now regularly cleared out.  The .old directories
are maintained semiautomatically (all the machinery is automatic but it
has to be manually started);  this will become fully automatic the next
time I work on it.
