One of the features of UNIX 3.0/4.0 is that all the special character
you mentioned (with the exception of '\') may be changed.
In addition, the characteristics of the input stream and output
stream are independently set.  Finally, a 'pad' mode for output
delays is available for use with statistical mux's.
