Of course, the way to kill leprechauns is obvious.
1.  Go as far away as you can in a straight line.
    Make sure you count the steps.
2.  Wield your bow.
3.  Shoot (ie, throw) your magic arrows at the creature.
4.  If you haven't done the leprechaun in by the time it will be two spaces
    from you, drop the bow and pick up your main weapon.
5.  Hit the wee beastie when it appears next to you.
6.  Generally, collect the gold.

Of course, the purpose is to kill the L before it can hit you.  You should also
have your best armor on.  Leprechauns are only on low levels, so that you
don't need to worry too much about some baddy sneaking up on you and catching
you without a good weapon.  However, I don't do this in rust monster territory
if I want to preserve my good armor.
