The same problem happened to me, and I think your biff notification had
nothing to do with it.  I "lost" my screen when I went down a level, and
also could not communicate except through interrupt (No, I do NOT want to
quit!!).  Anyway, I went off-hook, the game was automatically saved.  When
I restarted, I saw

			   #
After moving up (North) one step, the screen showed
			#@##
			   #
			    #
Apparently, I had descended INTO A WALL!  (I didn't FEEL any different.)
The moral of the story--don't quit.  If you're hardwired, just rip it out
of the wall!  Seriously, maybe that explains the situation, though I have no
solutions.
