Joy of Cooking
I'd also like to recommend "The Joy of Cooking" as an excellent general-
purpose cookbook.  Besides having a ton of recipes, there is a descriptive
section on just about anything edible that you can think of.  And, while
a lot of the recipes aren't all that imaginative, they're a great place to
start.
