Given that backups are necessary, my feeling is that the least disruptive way to run them is to keep to the schedule rigorously. This way, people know exactly when the system will be shut down and can plan accordingly. THEREFORE, we are not in a position to accommodate people who either misjudge the schedule or ignore it. It's not fair to everyone else to delay backups because one person wants "just a few more minutes". Users are welcome to work right up to the last minute -- with the system itself sending the warning messages, the schedule is never off more than a few seconds -- but the last minute is the LAST minute. When the "please sign off" message appears, we mean it. Please plan your work accordingly.
