WRT the mention of M.F.K.Fisher's book for starving students, may I also
recommend Mrs. Rasmussen's Book of One-arm Cookery by Mary Lasswell.
This book was written in the same time-frame (WW II) as a response to
popular demand for a copy of Mrs. Rasmussen's recipes featured in a set
of humorous stories about three superannuated ladies who lived together
for economic reasons.  The first story, if you are so inclined, is called
Suds in Your Eye.  Probably out of print, but worth trying to get.
