Rather than depress the s key M times, try using o to set options.
The "Flush type-ahead" is vital for survival.  Then you can just
type 99s or something.  The "Print only the end of a run" option speeds
up my games noticeably, by reducing the amount of output required.

Polymorph wands can be useful against T's and X's.
