Large character set terminals

I am looking for information on inexpensive terminals which support
character sets larger than 128, specifically which might support or be
configured to support a greek/math alternate set.

How do such terminals specify alternate characters?  8 bits? escape
sequences?

Any information or pointers would be helpful.
