Actually, R's don't appear until level 9. I usually take off
my armor just before leaving level 8 and from 9 to 18 I wear
armor only when I see a monster other than a R.  That can
hurt when a Centaur or something takes me by surprise.  By the
time I get my armor on, he's hit me three times.  (Does putting
armor on take two turns?  It seems that monsters can hit you
twice when you wield, Wear, Take, Put, or Remove something.)
