Rust monsters
Rust monsters start at level 9, not 8.  This has led to the following
fairly successful strategy:  At the beginning of level 9, I take off
my armor and don't put it back on until I am about to descend to level
13, which is where the trolls start.  However, for levels 13 through
15, I only wear my armor inside rooms, since the only dangerous
monsters on these levels are trolls and violet fungi, and they are
never found in corridors.  When I am about to descend to level 16,
I put my armor back on for good, since invisible stalkers start on this
level, and they can be found anywhere.

This whole strategy is based on the following observation:  If you need
your armor to survive levels 9-15, you're probably not going to make it
much further than that anyway.  This way, you end up not spending too
much time on a bad game.
