I was one of the designers of the h19 terminal.  Its 'computed sell
price', which is the price at which it would sell to earn standard
profits, was about $350.  Considering the amortization of the
design and tooling costs, Heath/Zenith are in a position to keep the
terminal competitive for a long time, by just dropping the price.

An interesting side effect of printed circuts and ic's is that it is
usually much cheaper to produce the wired version of a item than it 
is to produce the kit.  Thus, kit prices were normally set at what they
had to be to earn a profit, and wired prices were arbitrarily
set higher to maintain the 'kit advantage'.
