Why, oh why is there net.test, and why is it so heavily used???

What ever happened to the idea of having to.site groups for this purpose?
If you have to test your network connection, that will do just fine.
Also, if you exist inside a subnet, as many of us do, you can use a group
in the subnet.
There is no reason whatsoever to post a test message to the whole net.
