Given that you decide to go the UNIX route, I would recommend that
you get a hold of the new pick/troff package from Bell (rumored to be
released within the month by their legal staff).  It contains photo-typesetter
independent troff that can be easily adapted to different hardware.
Unfortunately, this package was intended for generating papers, not
newspapers.  A general layout and paste facility is not available (or
rather I am not aware of any).

If you are at MIT, I would recommend talking to Steve Ward about the
Western Digital Nu machines to be delivered this fall.  Should be just
what you want, although delivery schedule is somewhat fluid.
