I had the good fortune to use the Rand editor E (previously called ned) at Purdue University before I came to Bell Labs. Now I work at a 1200 Baud terminal (it was 300 until about a month ago!) and use VI only because its user interface is slightly more logical than that of EMACS. Why isn't E more widely used? The simple command structure, the ability to manipulate areas as well as lines, the multiple windows and the absence of buffers (one reason I don't use EMACS) makes E a very desirable editor. I can't remember seeing a paper mentioning E in any journal (maybe I missed it?) and I don't know anyone at Bell that uses it. Can anyone fill me in? I know David Yost and Judith Westbury are connected with E since their names appear on a document from Rand. David Newkirk
