Log(0) is undefined, but there is a perfectly legitimate and rigorous meaning to saying that, for instance lim log(x) = -infinity x->0 The meaning is that by making x as small as you like, you can make log(x) as large a negative number as you like. (read "small" to mean "close to zero"). This meaning can be defined without ever having to admit that there is such a number as "infinity".
