I've had similar experiences, and I've complained that whatever else
readnews does, it should leave things in a state checknews will understand
as meaning "no news".  The thing to do is to use "-vv" on checknews to find
out why it's complaining.  The two causes I found to be fairly common were
newsgroups with no articles, and .newsrc lines with only a group name but
no article list.  I believe that the former is fixed in the latest update,
but I'm not totally certain.
