checknews + readnews = ...eh?


For some reason, when I say "checknews" it says Yes, "There is news."
But when I then try to read it using readnews, it says "No news."
What a bizarre shtick!

I suppose one of those seq, history or bit files is slightly confused.

Has anybody else had this problem? 
Can it be easily fixed?
