I find biff to be a pain, so I don't use it.
Instead, I set the "mail" variable in csh.
This gives me a short message when mail arrives
but does not bother me when I am running a program.
The default 10 minute time between checks is too
long, but can be reduced easily. The only problem
is that you are only told that you have mail,
not who it is from.
