I saw that happen once too.  The person was playing as wizard and was given
+8 plate mail.  He had several of them in his hands and was trying to drop
them so he could pick up other stuff.  But even though they appeared on the
floor, his hands were still full of plate mail!  Being wizard, nearly
anthing is possible, and I know he had created various weird objects that
showed up as "Something bizarre" in an inventory, so I assumed it was
some bug related to that.  But if it happened to you in an otherwise
normal game, who knows.  You sure you didn't exploit some bug first,
like an arrow trap or a nymph?
