backup software
Today's full backup was marred by a minor screwup in the usr backup,
part human error and part unforgiving software.  The result was an
extra half hour of service interruption and a reversal of the 14.usr
tapes:  14.USRB is the first, 14.USRA is the second.

The backup software has been revised slightly so that (a) when a backup
fails, it asks for the tape mount over again before retrying, and (b) it
flushes tty input before each terminal interaction, to prevent piled-up
newlines from screwing things up.  Still on the agenda is a more important
change that would have prevented the whole hassle:  dump(1) should not
curl up and die when it cannot open the tape, it should ask for the
problem to be cleared up.
