numerical computing on Unix
At the moment our Unix system is not equipped to do serious numeric
computing while also providing decent service to a large number of other
users.  The equipment to remedy this is on order, but it's not here yet;
I am hoping it will arrive within a month.

Until then, users of apl and basic:  PLEASE try to confine serious usage
to off-hours.  YOU are the reason why the system has been so intolerably
slow during "working hours" of late.  This really cannot continue, it's
interfering with too many users' work.  If voluntary restrictions do
not work, compulsory ones will be necessary.
