Better Unix tape tools needed

I have a magtape with some tar-ed files on it.  I used a new
version of tar to write more on the tape, and somehow mucked
it up in the middle.  Now tar won't read past the bad spot.

Does anyone have any good tape tools, like programs to recover
stuff from mangled tapes?  Is all lost?
