Performance benchmarks

I would like to see some discussions on what members of this community
think appropriate tools for benchmarking UNIX systems.  With the current
abundance of UNIX processor systems, how can one reasonably comnpare?
This is complicated by performance of I/O systems, independent
of raw processor speed.  Does anyone have favorite benchmarks??
Have the "puzzle" benchmarks ever been formalized?

Where should such discussions go on?
