A tough chestnut
This problem appeared on the Putnam Exam a few years back.
It is of course to be solved without artificial aid; i.e.
use nothing but pencil and paper.

An octagon is inscibed in a circle of radius R units.
The octagon has four consecutive sides of length 1 unit,
and four consecutive sides of length 2 units.
Find the area (in square units) of the octagon.
