new modem installed
The new high-speed modem is now operating, running the 5121 line.  As
predicted, just now it is dialout-only.  This will be straightened out
shortly.

Neither of my worries about it turned out to be justified.  Once the
connection is established it is a fully transparent data path, with
autodialing commands no longer recognized, and (contrary to its
documentation!) it DOES manipulate the carrier-detected line properly
rather than just driving it high always.

An immediate consequence of this is that cron now handles the daily
network connection automatically in the middle of the night.  Manual
dialing is no longer necessary.  AT LAST!!!  HOORAY!!!
