zoom lenses


I'm in the market for a zoooom lense for my Cannon AE-1.
Anyone who's looked around recently realizes that there
now exist many different brands (Vivitar, Kiron, Tamron,
Tokina, Sigma, Soligor, ...) in addition to the manufacturers'
offerings.

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions/preferences/
test reports dealing with medium telephoto zooms?
I'm leaning towards a Vivitar Series 1, 70-210/3.5 macro,
which appears to be an excellent lense, but at a bit higher
than price than many others. Do you get what you pay for?
