DCS seminar List

Following is a list of seminars being held at the Dept. of Computer
Science during the week of **May 3**

Wednesday, May 5th, 4:00 P.M., MP134:  Professor Witold Lipsky,
  Inst. of Computer Science, Polish Acad. Sci., Warsaw (visiting
  the Univ. of Illinois), "On representing incomplete information
  relational databases."

Thursday, May 6th, 4:00 P.M., MP134:  Prof. Len Freeman, Univ. of
  Cincinnati, "The use of projections in quasi-Newton minimisation
  algorithms."

                           **Abstract**

	In 1975, Davidson introduced a new class of quasi-Newton
	minimisation methods, which even when the line search is
	inexact, are guaranteed to minimise a positive definite
	quadratic function in a finite number of iterations.  These
	methods have the structure of a traditional quasi-Newton
	method, but the updating is in terms of projected vectors.
	We shall review the development of these methods and shall
	describe a computer implementation which is both efficient		
	and stable.  Finally we present numerical results which
	indicate the value of the new methods.
