The method of producing color by varying black and white luminance was
tried briefly in 1966 by 7-up.  It failed dismally because it worked
only in the studio.  The vagueries of signal propagation made it seldom
if ever seeable outside studio monitors.  I noted at the time that the
commercials also took advantage of human suggestability by saying if
"You look real hard, you *might* see color..."
