Autzoo.1610 hacknews utzoo!henry Thu Apr 29 16:49:32 1982 shutting news off There was a problem yesterday which has happened a couple of times in the past: we suddenly got a flood of news traffic, and the news program ran long enough to interfere with morning users. (In fact, yesterday it interfered all day, because we got a week's backlog of news.) This should not happen in the future, since the autodialing modem now handles this every day in the wee small hours, but just in case it does, here is how to shut things off to let the users get some work done: 1. Make sure there really is a problem. News can run for a few minutes during the day for a variety of ordinary reasons; don't take action unless it has been running for some time. 2. Do a "ps a". You should see a process named "UUXQT". 3. Kill that process and only that process. 4. The other processes involved will take a few minutes to finish up and die a natural death. Don't kill them.
