memory testing
The new memory was installed experimentally and tested;  it works fine.
It is not in the system for the moment because I think I had better
increase the size of the system's memory-allocation table first;  an
overflow of that table has rather messy consequences.  I'm working on
that right now.

One odd thing happened as I was bringing the system back up after taking
the new memory out again:  the old memory went catatonic for a few minutes,
refusing to respond to the cpu.  I'm not sure just what happened.  In the
course of looking around, I happened to examine the memory's error register.
There was nothing in particular IN there, but after said examination the
memory seemed to work fine again.  Je ne sais quoi what the hell.
