shutdown mods
The shutdown(1) program has been altered experimentally to send a
"terminate" signal and wait 30 seconds for programs to clean up and
die before it actually shuts things down.  This (in principle) permits
running programs to close down cleanly;  in particular, in-progress
network conversations will shut down in an orderly way.  The major
effect will be that shutdown will take noticeably longer.
