dialup lines return!
The phone company, after some persuading, has reconnected our dialup
lines so Unix is phoneable again.  One of the four modems seems to
be broken, so one of the three 2579 lines (actually, it's 2581) rings
forever and never answers.  However, 5121 and the other two 2579 lines
work just fine.

We are still thinking about what exact policy on dialup usage should
be in force while we're in 507, but one thing is clear:  the dialups
are NOT intended to be used from within this building.  People who
use dialups to avoid walking up to 507 are hogging a scarce resource,
one which is badly needed by out-of-building users, and can expect to
be stepped on hard when we catch them.  Exceptions to this policy will
be granted in cases where it is IMPOSSIBLE for the particular work to
be done in 507 (not just inconvenient -- 507 is quite inconvenient but
there's little we can do about that).  People granted such exceptions
have priority on dialup usage.  If there is serious abuse of the dialups,
we may have to institute a system of reservations.
