dialup "fixed"
The ailing dialup modem has cured itself, it seems.  As a result of
the usual workings of Murphy's Law, when the Bell man came to fix it,
it was working perfectly and refused to misbehave.  He speculated on
an intermittent contact or suchlike in the cable;  it's possible.
